Tulip, Pear and Bunched Cloth

oil on board 6"x6"
For a very long time now I've felt uninspired to paint anything but landscapes and figures, but for some mysterious reason lately I've been happy to get back to the little artificial world of the still life.

  1. Interesting comment - little "artificial" world of still life.
I think of it as "true reality." A space where I can create what I see and feel, when and how...negative and positive. Unlike a landscape where nature has basically done the job for me. I know I can do a bit of landscaping with moving but not as much as the still life or figurative work.
Truly would love to hear your what your thoughts are.

  2. Julie, I love still life, and partly for the reasons you mention. We can have more control, which can lead to having more expressive ability. I was using the word "artificial" out of respect for the subject. Some artists like their still lives to look natural, as though they just came upon a scene by happenchance. Me, on the other hand, like to play up the composed/artificial aspect for all it's worth.

  3. Thanks Taryn. I understand completely what you mean. Neat!
The results in this one and the previous one are wonderful. They both grabbed me.
